Definition of Hiatal

Hiatal: Pertaining to an hiatus, an opening.

An hiatal hernia occurs when a part of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm at the opening where the esophagus normally passes through the diaphragm.

"Hiatus" in Latin means an opening.
