Definition of Mastectomy, prophylactic

Mastectomy, prophylactic: Removal of one or both breasts without the current presence of cancer. This surgery is sometimes chosen as a preventative measure by women who have a strong history of familial breast cancer. Also called a preventative mastectomy.
